After seeing all the stars that show up on your show–like the Jonas brother, writers and many more due to the fans request–I would love to introduce you to:

THE WONDER GIRLS

They are a 5 – member girl group from South Korea. They were created by Mr. Jin Young Park (JYP Entertainment). You may have known about this awesome CEO, as one of his branches is located in NYC, and he has composed songs for many American stars like Will Smith. He’s not just a producer but was also singer in the 80s-90s. Mr. Park has stated that he picked people due to fact that he likes them.

Wonder Girls is JYPE’s first girl group. And Mr. Park handpicked each member himself.

-Wonder Girls’ History-

The original Wonder Girls members were: Sun Ye Min, Hyun Ah Kim, So Hee Ahn, Sun Mi, and Ye Eun Park. Before their debut, they had a show with MTV called Wonder Girls MTV Show. It presented the members, where they live and how they practice. In the middle of the show, Mr. Park was looking for the fifth member to add to Wonder Girls. He had an audition at his studio and Ye Eun Park was chosen with the fact that she was the only one who could train and debut under such a short time. While working hard, all of them moved together and lived under one roof. Around this time, Rain Bi—another artist from JYPE–helped Mr. Park train these girls.

February 10 2007 to us, this is a day of memory, as Wonder Girls debuted for the first time. They presented us with the song, “Irony”, and wore school uniforms while performing. They have amazed us with their charisma, powerful dances, and amazing voices. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jJgBg5MUTQ

And shortly after their Debut, Wonder Girls had several showcases in China.

Throughout the rest of 2007, however, Wonder Girls were beset by various injuries and health problems. On June 25, Sohee was sidelined for a month after tearing a knee ligament while falling off a motorcycle during the filming of her 뜨거운 것이 좋아 (“I Like It Hot”) movie. The remaining four members continued performing until late July, when Hyuna was removed from the group due to concern over her health—in particular, chronic gastroenteritis, which had her hospitalized briefly in March and April.

-Rise to popularity-

On September 5, 2007, Good Entertainment, the talent agency for the popular boy band Shinhwa, sent their trainee Yubin to JYP Entertainment as a replacement for Hyuna. She made her debut three days later in the group’s live comeback performance of “Tell Me” on Music Bank .

Their first full-length album, The Wonder Years, was released the following week, on September 13, 2007, with “Tell Me.” Because of the last-minute addition of Yubin, the album does not contain her rap part. However, the performance version of the song was reworked to include a bridge with Yubin’s rap. The single was a hit and reached number one on various Korean television and internet music charts, including KBS’s Music Bank.

The choreography for the song was simple and widely imitated by fans across South Korea and in other countries. By October, many fan performances of the dance circulated on video sharing sites such as YouTube and Daum, including one by a group of policemen who were eventually profiled on SBS’s Star King. The dance became so popular, that it was known as the ‘Tell Me Virus’ and earned them the title of ‘Korea’s Little Sisters’. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuEtTEukjwI

Wonder Girls had an extensive promotional schedule for their album and in December 2007, they began performing a second track from their album, “이 바보” (“This Fool”). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdclb6oQO94

They made numerous appearances on variety shows and game shows, sang live on radio stations, music festivals, and music shows, and had special joint performances with other groups such as Big Bang. MTV has also aired three seasons of The Wonder Life, a reality TV series starring the girls. In January 2008, however, they ceased promotion of their album to prepare for their special appearance during Mr. Park’s concert in the United States–which was scheduled for March 2008.

-2008: More singles & continued popularity-

Wonder Girls returned to Korea in spring of 2008. In May, over the course of 5 days, a picture of each member, sporting their new “sexy” image, was released, starting with Ye-eun and ending with Sohee. Following this, a preview track from the upcoming single was released. There were rumors that ex-member Hyuna would be returning to join the group, but JYPE confirmed that this was not the case.

Their new track, “So Hot”, was released on May 22, 2008. The song topped online charts in the next few days. Wonder Girls began their comeback performances on May 31, 2008 on MBC’s Music Core, performing “So Hot” and “This Time” from their new single. The full single was released on June 3, 2008, containing the title track So Hot, the rap version of “Tell Me”, “This Time”, and “You’re Out”. Because of vocal cord problems, Yubin lip-synched her parts under doctor’s orders until late July. It was later announced that promotional activities for “So Hot” would end at the end of July 2008, and the group would instead prepare for their third mini-album, to be released at the end of September.

In September 2008, various hints and teasers were put up on Wonder Girls’ official website, including a teaser trailer that was also put up on JYPE’s official YouTube account. The full music video was then released on September 22, 2008, with the single, “Nobody”, being digitally released on the same day. They made their comeback the following weekend on Music Core, Music Bank, and Inkigayo. The song went to #1 on KBS’ Music Bank, staying there for four consecutive weeks, and also won Cyworld’s “Song of the Month” award in September and October 2008.

In November 2008, Wonder Girls revealed that they would have their own makeup line, consisting of 6 different “Wonder” products, and a reality show airing on M.Net, titled Wonder Bakery, in which the girls would pair up with aspiring chefs competing to win a cash prize. It was also stated that the Wonder Girls have made 12 billion (equivalent to $9 million) as a group.

At the 2008 M.Net MKMF Awards, Wonder Girls won three awards: “Song of the Year” and “Best Music Video” for “Nobody”, and “Best Female Group”. The group also won an award at the 2008 Golden Disk Awards for high digital sales.

-Overseas work-

In February 2008, Wonder Girls joined their Mr. Park for his month-long concert tour through Korea and the United States (including New York City and Los Angeles) as special guests. While in NYC, they took the opportunity to film the highly anticipated music video for their song, “Wishing on a Star”. Mr. Park has stated that the concerts were also meant to be a showcase for his other protégés, such as Min, G-Soul, and Lim Jeong Hee.

Wonder Girls then held a fan meeting in Bangkok, Thailand in May 2008, attracting over 10,000 fans. The group also performed at a festival in Flushing, Queens, New York during fall of 2008, joining with other artists in JYPE—who, together, have earned themselves the unofficial name as the JYP Family.

In September 2008, Wonder Girls was selected as a top girl group by Virgin Media, which put them amidst girl groups such as the Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, and Danity Kane.

Also, Wonder Girls performed “Nobody” and “Tell Me” in Singapore late 2008, attracting over 6,000 fans.

-Members’ profile-

*It’s normal in Asia to have the last name set in front of the name.*

YuBin
Full Name: Kim YuBin
Birthday: October 04 1988

Music Background: Yu Bin received hip hop training at Good Ent. (another Korean entertainment company) for two years. She was supposed to debut in a five member girl group. Because of certain problem, the debut date was pushed back and later disbanded.
For YuBin, to be the last one to join the group, and through this, replace the most favored member of the group, it was hard for her. There were negative comments about her entering the group, and some even threw things at her. Yet she looked away from them and worked herself up. Now she’s the most loved member for her personality and amazing rapping skills.

Family background: Yu Bin has lived in California, U.S. for a period, during which she attended Leland High School, up until she changed her mind to move back to South Korea to fulfill her dream. She has a little brother, and her family is still residing in California.

Ye-Eun
Full Name: Park Ye Eun
Birthday: May 26, 1989

Music Background: Compared to the other, she had zero years of training. Still she has one amazing voice that no one can compare to.

Family Background: Ye-Eun comes from a Christian family, and both of her parents are priests. Her parents and teachers were originally strongly against her dreams to become a singer and tried to change her mind. Yet, Ye Eun was determined to achieve her dream, and indeed, she did.

While people say “3 times is a charm”, for Ye Eun, it’s “4 times is a charm”. Ye Eun wouldn’t make it as a professional singer until her fourth audition for JYPE. Of course everyone was happy for her, her mother gave up on trying to change her mind, and, instead, supported her.

Sun Ye
Full Name: Min Seon Ye
Birthday: August 12 1989

Music Background: She was first discovered on a TV Show (“JYP’s Challenge of 99%”) in 2001. After the show she was signed with JYPE and went under 7 years of training before becoming the leader of the Wonder Girls.

Family Background: When Sun Ye was born, her mother died. Her father was absent for the most time of her life. So Sun Ye and her brother grew up without her parents, but instead, was in the care of her grandparents–whom she sees as her parents instead. In contrast to Ye Eun’s experience, Sun Ye’s grandparents were very supportive of her dreams of becoming a singer. Though Sun Ye looks up to her grandfather, he passed away right before the “Tell Me Craze.” It was a very tough period, during which she was too sad to eat or do anything else.

Individual works: Sun Ye has sung a song for a Korean Drama. She was also featured in her Park Jin Young’s album. In addition to this, Sun Ye has had several collabs with other Korean artists and was also featured in two episode of a sketch. She was also an MC along with So Hee on a weekly music show

Fun facts:
– She always carry coffee.
– She’s always hardworking and likes to be a perfectionist.
– She can speak chinese very well and is currently working to perfect her English skills.

Sun Mi
Full name: Seon Mi
*The background of her name it’s pretty funny, still it was special because it’s rare to have only two words for a name in Korea. Sun is her last name, Mi is her firstname.*
Birthday: May 2. 1992

Music Background: Seon Mi was trained for 1 year and 6 months. During this time it was hard for her, because her biological father died, and along with Sun Mi, his wish was to become a singer. So the main reason of this all, was to fulfill her father’s wish. Before her debut, Seon Mi was unsecured and was afraid she wouldn’t be good enough to become the world’s best singer. (Wonder Girls’ “Wishing on a Star” music video shows us their dreams about becoming the world’s best singer – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF9s-NL2xqM )

Family background: After her father died, Seon Mi’s mother remarried with another man. So now, she also has a little brother. And when she speaks about her father, it’s about her stepfather instead. Seon Mi didn’t get enough attention or love when she was younger, so she often gets her attention needs from the family.
* On the Irony track, she wrote to her father about the dreams she’s fulfilling and if he sees where she’s at now.*

Fun facts:
– She’s one of the youngest in Wonder Girls, but took the job of being the youngest by showing everyone her cuteness.
– She’s always praising other, waiting for them to praise her back.
– She cares a lot about earth and recycling.
– Ser nickname is 4-Dimensional Alien, because she wishes to meet an Alien and she’s different throughout her mood changes.

So Hee
Full Name: Ahn So Hui
Birthday: June 27, 1992

She’s indeed the youngest of the group. But she doesn’t act like one; instead, she’s mature for her age.

Music background: So Hui has trained for 2 years and 3 months. She’s different from the others in that, she has amazing dancing skills and acting skills. Although her singing abilities aren’t as great but she’s working to get there.

Family background: So Hui is one of those kids who experienced their parent’s divorce at a young age. Along with her older sister, So Hui moved in with her father. As for her mother, she has never seen her mother since she was younger. Because of this she has learned to mature early on and be a caring daughter for her family.

Individual work: So Hui played in a Korean movie in 2008, titled, “I like it hot,” as one of the leasing roles. She has also appeared in a few commercials for others in Korea. She played the role of a deaf girl at age 12. On top of this, she was an MC with Kim Hyun Ah and Brian Joo on a weekly music show and once again with Sun Ye later on another weekly music show.

Fun Facts
– She gets a lot of negative criticism and hate from others because of her inability to sing like the rest of the members. Nevertheless, she keeps going.
– She’s expressionless most of the time, but when she smiles, it lightens up the room – everyone smiles then.
– She’s mature for her age
– She’s always working hard and wouldn’t let others know.
– She’s introvertiv.
– She’s always shy around strangers.
